The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 got underway with the tournament opener between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 22 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The hosts were asked to bat first by RCB as Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine stepped out in the middle to mark the commencement of the the mega event.
De Kock's stay at the crease was shortened courtesy of a brilliant catch by Jitesh Sharma behind the wickets, which also gave RCB their first breakthrough, as Josh Hazlewood got the better of the ace wicketkeeper-batter on just the fifth ball of the match. An inside-edge off the Proteas' bat, saw the ball change its direction, but his opposition counterpart Jitesh was sharp enough behind the wickets to pluck the ball into his gloves.

Later in the encounter, KKR could put up a total of 174/8 at the end of 20 overs. RCB chased down the target very convincingly to clinch their first win of the season by seven wickets and 22 balls to spare. Beating the defending champions would surely give the Rajat Patidar-led side the much-needed confidence for the remainder of the tournament.
RCB will next engage in a face-off against rivals Chennai Super Kings on March 28, whereas, Kolkata will face Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 26.
