The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), are almost out of the playoffs race in the ongoing season. The MS Dhoni-led side suffered their seventh loss of the season after being beaten by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by five wickets on their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Talking about the match, SRH won the toss and asked CSK to put runs on the scoreboard. The home side started the innings with a new opening pair, Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre, as Rachin Ravindra was dropped. However, the change didn’t really pay off as Rasheed registered a golden duck. But Mhatre continued to show the intent and kept scoring runs at a good pace.

Later, SRH skipper Pat Cummins introduced Harshal Patel into the attack, who got rid of Sam Curran in the fifth over. Cummins himself then dismissed Mhatre in the very next over on 30 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Dewald Brevis tried to build a partnership, but Kamindu Mendis produced a brilliant delivery to send Jadeja back to the pavilion.

Brevis unleashed some magnificent shots, but once again, Mendis became the reason for CSK’s another dismissal. A terrific catch at the boundary rope by Mendis ended Brevis' 42-run knock. After that, CSK struggled to hit boundaries and managed to put only 154 runs on the scoreboard. Harshal was the star bowler for SRH, picking up four wickets while conceding only 28 runs in his four-over quota.

Chasing the target, SRH lost their explosive opening batter Abhishek Sharma for a duck in the very first over of the innings. However, Travis Head and Ishan Kishan kept the scoreboard ticking before Anshul Kamboj cleaned up Head with a magnificent delivery. But the out-of-form batter, Kishan, kept the one end safe with sensible batting and scored 44 runs off 34 deliveries.

Heinrich Klaasen was dismissed quite cheaply on just seven runs by Jadeja, while Noor Ahmad also provided CSK with two critical breakthroughs: Kishan and Aniket Verma. It looked like CSK were back into the match, but Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy never let that happen with an unbeaten 49-run stand for the sixth wicket and helped the team win the game by five wickets.
