On Sunday evening at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) handed Delhi Capitals (DC) their first defeat of IPL 2025, pulling off a thrilling 12-run win. Delhi, who had been unbeaten with four consecutive wins, were finally brought down by a clinical MI performance.

Asked to bat first after DC skipper Axar Patel won the toss, MI posted 205/5, thanks to a 59 off 33 balls from Tilak Varma. The southpaw made it look easy as he smashed six boundaries and three sixes. He was supported by Ryan Rickelton (41 off 25), Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), and Naman Dhir, who gave the final push with an unbeaten 38 off 17.

The DC bowlers had some moments to cherish with the ball. Kuldeep Yadav was exceptional with figures of 2/23, while Vipraj Nigam bagged 2/41, including the prized wickets of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, respectively.

Chasing 206, the home team lost Jake Fraser-McGurk early, who was dismissed for a golden duck by Deepak Chahar. But Karun Nair and Abishek Porel began a counterattack, stitching together a 119-run stand. Nair raced to a 22-ball fifty and eventually scored 89 off just 40 balls, an innings that included 12 fours and five sixes. Porel chipped in with a 33 before falling to Karn Sharma.

The game shifted when MI picked up wickets in the middle overs. Jasprit Bumrah removed Axar Patel, and Karn struck thrice, including the dismissal of KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs. With Nair gone and wickets falling, DC were down to their last pair needing 14 off 8 balls. Ashutosh Sharma’s effort was cut short due to a run-out while attempting a second run. Ultimately, DC were bowled out for 193 in 19 overs.
