The Gujarat Titans (GT) opened their account in IPL 2025 with a convincing 36-run victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) at their home ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
After being put in to bat first, the Titans made the most of the powerplay as captain Shubman Gill (38 off 27) and Sai Sudharsan (63 off 41) provided a flying start. The duo took the team to 66/0 in six overs. However, MI’s bowlers pulled things back once the fielding restrictions were lifted. Hardik Pandya continued his record over Gill by dismissing him for the fourth time in T20 cricket.
Jos Buttler (39 off 24) played a crucial role in the middle overs, but the visitors kept taking wickets at regular intervals, preventing GT from posting a score over 200. Despite a late collapse, where the side lost five wickets in quick succession, they managed to get to 196/8 in 20 overs. For Mumbai, Pandya (2/29) was the pick of the bowlers, while Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman also chipped in with a wicket each.
The chase got off to a disastrous start for the five-time champions, as Mohammed Siraj dismissed former captain Rohit Sharma for just 8 in the first over. Siraj struck again in the fifth over to send back Ryan Rickelton (6), as MI managed to get 48 runs in the powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 28) and Tilak Varma (39 off 36) tried to stabilise the innings, but the required run rate kept going up.
Prasidh Krishna (2/18) delivered a brilliant spell after being brought in after the 11th over. He first dismissed Tilak just when he was looking to go for the big shots. Suryakumar followed soon after, giving a catch to Gill. With the lower order failing to provide the much-needed acceleration, MI eventually managed only 160/6 in 20 overs. GT’s bowlers executed their plans brilliantly, with Prasidh and Mohammed Siraj picking up two wickets each. Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore were economical and bagged one wicket apiece.
This loss makes it MI’s second consecutive defeat this season. Pandya’s return as captain has not brought positive results, and the five-time champions need to regroup quickly to find their first win of the season. On the other hand, Gujarat will be relieved to get their first points on the board and carry the same momentum forward.
