Gujarat Titans (GT) lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 11 runs in a high-scoring thriller at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, March 25.
Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to field first on what seemed like a fantastic batting surface. Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed cheaply but Priyansh Arya and captain Shreyas Iyer amassed a 51-run partnership off just 21 balls. After Arya was dismissed for 47 off 23 balls, Azmatulla Omarzai, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis could not cause much damage.
However, Shreyas took the onus upon himself to take Punjab to a mammoth total. He got excellent support from Shashank Singh, who got accustomed to the conditions in no time. The two batters pulverised the Gujarat bowlers, forging an unbeaten 81-run partnership off just 28 balls. The last five overs of the innings yielded 87 runs. Shashank remained unbeaten on 44 off 16 balls. Meanwhile, Shreyas toppled his previous highest score in the IPL, finishing on 97 not out off 42 deliveries. R Sai Kishore was the pick of the bowlers for the home side as he finished with figures of 3/30 in four overs.
Chasing a mammoth target of 244, Gujarat needed their young openers - Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan to fire. They did exactly that as they played some gorgeous shots to notch up a 61-run partnership inside the powerplay. Glenn Maxwell was introduced into the attack and the gamble paid off as Shubman perished while attempting a big shot.
Jos Buttler joined Sudharsan and they added 84 runs off 40 balls without taking too many risks. Arshdeep Singh broke the partnership in the 13th over as Sudharsan departed for a well-compiled 74 off 41 balls. Sherfane Rutherford came in as the Impact Player and he got off to a fabulous start. Buttler also played well from the other end and got himself to a half-century.
However, Vijaykumar Vyshak came in as the Impact Player for Punjab and he showed great composure under pressure. He bowled full and close to the wide line and Rutherford struggled to adapt.
As many as 27 runs were needed off the last over and while Gujarat had seven wickets in the bank, scoring those many against Arshdeep was an uphill task. In the end, the hosts lost two wickets and scored 15 to finish on 232/5. Arshdeep bagged two wickets, conceding 36 runs in his four overs. Meanwhile, Maxwell and Marco Jansen chipped in with a wicket apiece.
