Match 21 of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League saw Lucknow Super Giants emerge victorious against Kolkata Knight Riders by four runs at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday, April 8. This win marked LSG's third of the season.
The first, third, and fifth overs of LSG's powerplay resulted in an aggregate of only 13 runs. However, Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh made full use of the remainder of the three overs, amounting 59 off the first six overs. The first wicket to fall was off the second delivery after the completion of the halfway stage of the innings, with Harshit Rana cleaning Markram (47 off 28) up with an absolute gem.
It was the same over in which Marsh brought up his fourth IPL 2025 fifty in five matches. Nicholas Pooran walked in and set the stage on fire straightaway. By the end of the 15th over, the aggressive southpaw had already reached 32 off just 16 deliveries. Marsh was dismissed on 81 off 48, but Pooran kept going wiithout taking his foot off the pedal. The West Indian ended up amassing 87* (36). Varun Chakravarthy (0/31 in four overs) was the pick of the bowlers.
Chasing 239 for victory, KKR were off to a sensational start. Apart from Quinton de Kock departing early, Sunil Narine and Ajinkya Rahane took the charge to the bowlers. A colossal 90 runs were made during the powerplay. Digvesh Rathi snagged Narine's (30 off 13) wicket on the second delivery of his spell. With how KKR had progressed up until the midpoint of their innings, it was their game to lose.
KKR lost the plot in the overs to follow. They lost a series of wickets in successive overs with no batters truly being able to settle into their groove. Venkatesh Iyer getting dismissed for 45 (29) tilted the scale towards LSG. Ravi Bishnoi just about held his nerve while defending 24 in the final over of the game. Rinku Singh ended the game unbeaten on 38 off 15, but it was not meant to be for his side.
