Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs in a rare high-scoring thriller at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday, April 4, in match No. 16 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field first on a pitch which looked much better for batting than the ones fans are used to seeing at the Ekana. Mitchell Marsh validated this by playing a dazzling knock of 60 off 31 balls. However, Mumbai struck back strongly after the powerplay to pick up three wickets in five overs.
Aiden Markram dropped anchor and helped Lucknow regain momentum. Ayush Badoni gave his solid support as the duo added a crucial 51-run partnership off 31 deliveries. Markram scored his first half-century of the season off 34 balls before getting out in the 18th over.
David Miller played a stunning cameo at the death, scoring 27 off 14 balls. His flurry of boundaries towards the back end of the innings helped Lucknow get to 203/8 in their 20 overs. Hardik Pandya was the pick of the MI bowlers, as he finished with figures of 5/36 in his four overs.
In reply, LSG's new-ball bowlers Shardul Thakur and Akash Deep dismissed openers Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks, respectively. Naman Dhir got off to a fantastic start, smashing 31 runs off his first 10 balls. However, he slowed down considerably after this and added 15 off the next 14 deliveries. Nonetheless, the Punjab batter added a 69-run partnership with Suryakumar Yadav.
After Dhir was dismissed by the in-form Digvesh Rathi, Tilak Varma joined forces with Suryakumar. The MI vice-captain played some delightful shots but Tilak struggled to find his timing. Suryakumar was eventually dismissed for 67 off 43 balls in the 17th over.
Hardik hit a boundary off his first ball, as MI needed 48 runs off the last 22 balls with six wickets in hand. Tilak decided to retire himself out in the penultimate over which yielded MI just seven runs. Shardul bowled to his field, using all his experience, leaving 22 runs for MI to get off the final over.
Hardik started the over with a six. However, Avesh Khan bounced back commendably, going for just three runs off his last five deliveries. The tourists finished on 191/5, crashing to their third defeat in the season. All the LSG bowlers conceded runs at an economy rate of 10 and above. However, Rathi bowled exceptionally through the middle overs and helped LSG pull things back nicely. His four-over spell yielded just 21 runs and he also got rid of the dangerous Dhir.
