Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bounced back in style by beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by eight wickets at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, in Match 6 of IPL 2025. The two teams both needed a win after both losing their opening games of the season, but KKR proved too strong after 37.3 overs of action.
Choosing to bowl first, KKR's well-disciplined bowling unit held RR to 151/9. In the absence of Sunil Narine, the bowlers were magnificent, with Varun Chakravarthy (2/17), Moeen Ali (2/23), Harshit Rana (2/36), and Vaibhav Arora (2/33) all contributing. Rajasthan's batsmen failed to find partnerships, and regular wickets meant that RR put up a sub-par score on a good batting pitch.
In pursuit of 152, Quinton de Kock thrashed the RR bowlers, scoring an unbeaten 97 off 61 balls. Despite RR beginning on a promising note, De Kock found top gear after his 36-ball fifty, thrashing eight fours and six sixes. He thrashed the short balls mercilessly, racking up 36 runs with pull shots, and ended the match in style by clearing long-on with a massive six off Jofra Archer. His sensational knock steered KKR towards victory with 15 balls to spare, taking them to sixth position in the standings as RR slipped to the bottom.
In Narine's absence, KKR's bowlers successfully implemented their strategies. Moeen Ali proved his inclusion with sharp spells, and Chakravarthy's variations suppressed RR's batsmen. Pacemen Arora and Rana ensured no unions could take off, breaking RR's middle order. Although Spencer Johnson conceded 42 runs, his early success kept things under control.

In the absence of Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag seemed out of depth. His bowling selections were uncertain, and his field placements were reactive, as KKR's batters ran amok. With Samson not yet fully recovered, RR will have to pick up the pieces quickly and prevent further setbacks.
KKR will seek to capitalise on this momentum, while RR need to sort out their batting collapses and Parag's lack of experience as captain. With two successive losses, RR need a revival to remain in the hunt for IPL 2025.
