Hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) got the better of Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a high-scoring encounter in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, in Hyderabad, on Sunday, March 23.
Riyan Parag, playing his first match as Rajasthan's captain, won the toss and opted to field first on a belter of a surface. This decision played into Hyderabad's hands as their openers—Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma—smashed the opposition bowlers all around the park.
Abhishek failed to capitalize on his explosive start, as he was dismissed for 24 (11). However, Head and Ishan Kishan took the attack to the Rajasthan bowlers, who had nothing going in their favour. Rajasthan were lackluster on the field, despite the outfield being excellent.
Head and Kishan added 85 runs for the second wicket off just 39 balls. After Head departed for 67 (31), Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy forged a 72-run stand off 29 deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking at a rapid pace. Reddy was dismissed for a 15-ball 30 before Heinrich Klaasen came to the crease. The South African wicketkeeper-batter raced to 34 off 14 balls before becoming Sandeep Sharma's first victim of the game.
Kishan went on to score his first IPL century in the penultimate over. He eventually remained unbeaten on 106 off 47 balls, hitting 11 fours and six sixes. Hyderabad finished on 286/6 in their 20 overs.
In reply, Rajasthan had no option but to go after the bowlers from the start. However, they lost the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Parag, and Nitish Rana in the powerplay, denting their progress. Sanju Samson, who came in as the Impact Player, looked in sublime touch as he played some gorgeous strokes. Dhruv Jurel came out to bat at No. 5 and showed no signs of nerves while chasing the daunting target.
The two wicketkeeper-batters added 111 runs off 60 balls before Samson was dismissed for 66 (37) in the 14th over. He had received a reprieve from Mohammed Shami earlier in the innings but failed to capitalize. Jurel also departed in the following over for 70 (35), as Sunrisers began to sense victory.
Shubham Dubey and Shimron Hetmyer hit some lusty blows to take Rajasthan closer to the target. Their 80-run partnership off 34 balls helped the Royals reduce the margin of defeat. Hetmyer was dismissed in the final over for a 23-ball 42, while Dubey remained unbeaten on 34 off just 11 deliveries. Rajasthan finished on 242/6 in their 20 overs, putting up a commendable fight despite the odds being against them.
