On expected lines, Punjab Kings (PBKS) appointed Shreyas Iyer as the captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The right-handed batter was roped in by the Punjab-based franchise at the IPL 2025 mega-auction for a whopping sum of INR 26.75 crore.
The right-handed batter led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) commendably in IPL 2024 and helped them win the coveted title after a long wait of 10 years. According to KKR CEO Venky Mysore, the three-time IPL-winning franchise wanted to retain Shreyas for the upcoming season but he insisted on entering the auction to test his market value.

In the dying hours of Sunday, January 12, Punjab Kings put out a post across their social media handles to introduce their fans to their new captain.
"I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title," Shreyas told PBKS after being appointed as the captain.

Shreyas led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in December last year. However, under his leadership, Mumbai failed to reach the knockout stage of the subsequent Vijay Hazare Trophy. The 30-year-old is in line to be selected for India's ODI squad which will face England in a three-match series next month. He is expected to play at No. 4 in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The Mumbai-born made his last international appearance for the national team in August 2024 during the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
