It doesn't concern me that India lost a series: Wasim Jaffer

The biggest concern for the former cricketer was the Men in Blue playing only three One-Dayers ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.

Team India lost their three-game ODI series to Sri Lanka. It was the first time in 27 years that India lost an ODI series to Sri Lanka. After tying the first ODI, India succumbed to a loss in the second and third clashes, which resulted in Sri Lanka clinching the series in a massive upset.

With the series done and dusted, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer took centre stage and talked about the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy. Jaffer raised concerns over how India only had a handful of ODIs before the marquee tournament.

India’s first ODI assignment under new head coach Gautam Gambhir ended in disappointment for the visitors, and taking X, Jaffer opined that losses are part and parcel of the game, but having a small number of ODIs to practice before the Champions Trophy is something that makes him worry.

“SL played better cricket and deserve the series win. It doesn't worry me that India lost a series. Wins and losses are part of the game. However, it's a point of concern that India has just 3 ODIs before the Champions Trophy,” Jaffer posted on microblogging platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

When you're playing for India, there's no complacency: Rohit Sharma

Speaking of the third ODI, the Lankan Lions came in to bat first and posted a total of 248 runs in the first innings. Furthermore, as India came out to chase, the hosts managed to put in an excellent performance with the ball and bundled India out for just 138 runs, winning the game by 110 runs.

After the game, India skipper Rohit Sharma took centre stage and gave credit to Sri Lanka for their performance, opining that the hosts played better than them, and there are some things that the Indian team will be looking over to improve.

“When you're playing for India, there's no complacency. We have to give credit where credit is due, Sri Lanka played better than us. We looked at the conditions, wanted to take pace off the ball, and that's why we went with our combination. All in all we didn't play good cricket through the series, and that is why we stand here. Throughout there were a few positives too. How the spinners bowled, some of the batters in the middle as well. We lost the series, and I feel there are a lot of areas we need to look at rather than the positives,” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
