India defeated South Africa by seven runs to win the T20 World Cup 2024. The Proteas needed 30 runs in the same number of deliveries and the game was well within their control, especially with two of their set batters - David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen on the crease. However, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance brought India back into the contest and put the Aiden Markram-led side in trouble.
They required 16 runs in the final over. In the first delivery, Suryakumar’s brilliant catch sent Miller packing, giving India the necessary momentum. Post that, captain Rohit Sharma shared that he asked his players not to back down from sledging as they wanted to put more pressure on the new batter. The 37-year-old stated that he would not be able to reveal what was said at that moment but he gave confidence to his teammates and advised them to sledge however they wanted and not to think about the umpires and the match referee.

“We all said a few things to their batsmen, which I can't share but it was important to do that because we wanted to win at any cost. Maine sab players ko bola ki umpire aur referee's ko baad mein dekh lenge. Even if we get fined after winning, that's not a problem. That was in my mind. So I told the boys 'jisko jo bolna hai bolo bindaas, umpires and referees ko hum baad mei handle karenge (just say whatever you want to say, we will handle the umpires and referees later),” Rohit said in The Great Kapil Sharma show on Netflix.
