Jos Buttler has stepped down from the position from England white-ball skipper, sending shockwaves across the cricketing fraternity. The announcement was made official by Buttler himself in a pre-match media interaction ahead England's Champions Trophy clash against South Africa on Saturday, March 01.

I am gonna stand down as England captain. It's a right decision for me, a right decision for the team. And hopefully, somebody else can come in and work closely alongside Brendon McCullum to take the team back to where it needs to be. (On what made him arrive at this decision) It was quite clear. This was an important tournament -  results-wise, for my captaincy. Two losses and being out of the tournament. A bit of a hangover from some tournaments before, just probably reached the end of road for my captaincy, which I am ashamed and sad about," Buttler said in his statement.

Buttler further stated that he was excited as ever when McCullum came in as the white-ball coach, and he hoped to for their duo to put the team back on track, which unfortunately could not happen. As a result, the wicketkeeper-batter took the conscious decision for himself and for the team to have a change in the face of English leadership in the white-ball formats.

"With Brendon coming in only recently, I was really excited to work closely alongside and hope for a very quick turnaround and take the team forward, and it's not quite worked that way. So, it just feels like it is the right time for me and also for the team to have a change," he added.

For the unversed, England had really tough time in the ICC events following their T20 World Cup win in 2022. The team was knocked out of the ODI World Cup in 2023, ending the tournament as one of the worst performers despite boasting a formidable squad. The subsequent year had England being knocked out by India in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.

More recently, The Three Lions also got dominated by the Men in Blue during the white-ball series, losing T20Is 1-4 and a whitewash in the three ODIs. Then came the Champions Trophy, where England first lost to Australia followed by a upset at the hands of Afghanistan, which also knocked them out of the tournament. They will be up against South Africa on Saturday, which will mark the last outing for Buttler as English captain.
