New Zealand (NZ) took on England (ENG) in the third Test of the series at Seddon Park in Hamilton, on (Saturday) December 14. England won the toss and opted to bowl first and got a first breakthrough in the form of Will Young, who departed scoring 42 off 92. Kane Williamson entered the fray when New Zealand were 105/1. The batter saw through initial deliveries and started dealing in boundaries.
After Tom Latham’s wicket, the onus fell up on Williamson and Rachin Ravindra to rebuild the innings. But the former New Zealand Test skipper had a forgettable day as he fell to a rather unfortunate dismissal. Williamson defended a delivery from Matthew Potts and the ball ricochetted from the pitch towards the stumps.
The right-handed batter was quick to gauge the potential outcome and tried to deviate the delivery through his leg, as it was going on to hit the stumps. As luck would have it, the leather fetched a good chunk of Kane Williamson’s kick and the bails were off rapidly. The veteran was in palpable agony and exclaimed in devastation at the onset of the unfortunate outcome. He scored 44 runs off 87 deliveries laced with eight boundaries.

Test cricket has been special for me: Tim Southee
After Williamson’s wicket, the subsequent batters failed to dig a base and walked off quickly posting little cameos. The only substantial contribution came in the form of Mitchell Santner, who remained unbeaten on 50* runs at Stumps on Day 1. New Zealand finished the Day 1 with a score of 315/9. Kiwi skipper, Tim Southee, who is playing his final Test with this game was emotional at the toss before the game.

“A moment in time you hope it never comes. I think it is the right time. The depth there is outstanding. Has been a great ride. Hopefully one great last week. The series hasn't gone to plan. Hopefully, we can put it in a good performance this week. Have been living here. Special place. You want to win every game you play. Has been a big Test year for us,” said Southee at the toss.
“Test cricket has been special for me. To play more than 100 Tests is his special. The team mates and the friendships you form. I will take back many good memories. I have always enjoyed watching the game. Would love watching this group as a fan,” he added.
