Last few years have been the most enjoyable of my career: Joe Root
Joe Root was adjudged Player of the Series alongside Kamindu Mendis.
Star England batter Joe Root hit 17 centuries in Test cricket since 2021. He has been phenomenal, to say the least, and has been England’s best batter in one of their glorious chapters in red-ball cricket. Since the concept of Bazball first came to the scene, there were talks of whether Root would survive for a long time in the Test team. However, he defied all the odds, changed his game and is ranked the number one Test batter in the world.
Speaking about his journey with the England team after losing his captaincy to Ben Stokes, Root noted that the last few years have been the most enjoyable in his career. He mentioned that the game is not easy all the time as it is changing rapidly and added that he had to work hard to get better. He also talked about his love for playing for England and stated that he is willing to turn up every day and do well for the national team.

“I feel good, you know how fickle this game is, you have to keep working. Try and work as hard as I can to get better. I love playing in this team, great lads, play some really exciting cricket. Turn up every day wanting to get stuck in because of the way we go about it. Last few years have been the most enjoyable of my career and long may that continue. May the success of this team continue as well,” Root said after the third match against Sri Lanka in Kennington Oval.

Root explains England's defeat to Sri Lanka in third Test
Notably, Root hit twin centuries against Sri Lanka at Lord’s, which helped the team win the match by 190 runs but in the third Test, the hosts struggled as they lost by eight wickets. Even though the Ollie Pope-led side sealed the series 2-1, the team management will not be very happy with the performance.
Speaking of the same, Root mentioned that it is an opportunity for them to learn and added that the conditions were very different than they expected for the game.

“I think we came up against different conditions in this game. As a team, we try to keep finding ways to put pressure on the opposition but unfortunately for us, it didn’t come off this game. We still stick to our methods, there will be times when we get challenged and we need to find ways to get back into the game. It's an opportunity for us to learn and keep getting better,” Root said.
