Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have announced their most awaited retention list of players for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season and have retained their core group of players who have been key in the franchise's illustrious history.
The side has shown faith in Hardik Pandya (INR 16.35 crore), Jasprit Bumrah (INR 18 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (INR 16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (INR 16.30 crore), and Tilak Varma (INR 8 crore).
The retention announcement was made after a forgettable 2024 season where the side saw a significant leadership change and speculation about player movements. Meanwhile, the franchise had a disappointing campaign as they finished at the bottom of the points table. Akash Ambani, the team owner opened up about the retentions and the franchise's strategy ahead of the season.
“We have always believed that the strength of a family lies in its core and this belief has been reinforced during the course of recent events. We are thrilled that the strong legacy of MI will be carried forward by Jasprit, Surya, Hardik, Rohit and Tilak - players who have become synonymous with our team and the brand of cricket we stand for," Ambani said.
In the past month, the MI core group, along with our coaching staff, have come together and worked closely to establish a shared vision for MI. This unified effort reinstates MI’s commitment to building strong trust and ownership amongst our core group, our fans & other stakeholders. We will strive to continue playing the passionate brand of cricket everyone expects from us," he added.
MI to go in auction with INR 45 Crore
Meanwhile, total retention expenditure stands at INR 75 crore, with the franchise having INR 45 crore to build their remaining squad in the upcoming mega auction. This retention is particularly significant for Rohit, who recently led India to their second T20 World Cup triumph.
The side also sees the return of Mahela Jayawardane as head coach and the inclusion of Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach alongside Lasith Malinga. With one Right-to-Match (RTM) option and an uncapped player eligible for RTM, Mumbai is well-positioned to strengthen its squad in the upcoming auction.
