Indian cricketing legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni recently opened up about various aspects of his life, from cricket to family, friendships, and beyond. In an insightful conversation, the former Indian captain shared the core principles that guide him, both on and off the field.

Asked to reveal that values he upholds besides trust, the stalwart emphasised the importance of discipline and hard work as the foundational principles of life. Whether it is in cricket, business, or day-to-day life, the wicketkeeper explained that discipline remains constant.

The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain also reflected on how discipline plays a vital role in every sphere of life, but acknowledged that even he sometimes struggles with it. The 43-year-old admitted that despite valuing punctuality, he is not always perfect.

“Discipline, hard work - the basic principles of life. You know, and the pleasure of accomplishment. Let me be more specific. Basic discipline and I'm talking about myself. I'm talking about a third person. So, how I am disciplined when it comes to cricket, I'll be the same if I have a business. I'm the same as a human being. So discipline, something very basic as being on time. I believe in that. Again, it is not controllable. I am a bit careless about it. How much time it will take, what can we do,” said the former Indian captain in Raj Shamani's podcast.

Dhoni on the importance of hard work

The Ranchi-born cricketer spoke about the importance of hard work, a principle deeply instilled in him by his father and grandfather. He remarked that hard work is irreplaceable, regardless of how people perceive it.

“There is no substitute for hard work. My father and grandfather used to say this too, I will also say this. My coming generation will also say this. There is no substitute for hard work. People may have different views. The lazy person often finds the best way of doing the job with the least amount of effort. But he also thinks that it is hard work because he is lazy. So hard work is again important,” added the legend.

Through his words, the right-handed batter again showcased the humility, wisdom, and values that made him not just a cricketing icon but a role model to millions.
