Nathan Lyon teases Mitchell Starc while extending best wishes to Australian team ahead of Women's T20 WC final
Australia will be facing South Africa in the summit clash of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023.
The summit clash of the eighth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup is all set to get underway on February 26, at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. While five-time champions Australia became the first team to enter the final, hosts South Africa scripted history after defeating England in the semi-final and making their way into their first-ever T20 World Cup final.
While the Australian side would aim to lift the trophy for a record sixth time, in their seventh T20 World Cup final, the Proteas women will be looking to break the ICC title curse and lift the prestigious silverware on their home ground.
Ahead of the all-important clash, Mitchell Starc, who is currently in India for the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy, shared his best wishes for the women’s team. Cricket Australia shared a video of him praising the Women’s team for the brilliant efforts showcased in the tournament so far, but what caught audiences’ attention was Nathan Lyon pulling Starc’s leg.
“Shell, Meg, and all the girls over there in South Africa, from us here in India, it’s been great to watch the tournament so far. You keep finding ways of winning from even in positions you probably shouldn’t, so credit to you there. You keep winning these things. Good luck on Sunday. I hope it’s another great game and you lift another trophy for you, the second three-peat for a few of you. So, good luck girls. We’ll be watching on proudly.,” said Starc in the video.
While Starc was praising the team and wishing them best luck to lift the trophy for a record sixth time, Nathan Lyon interrupted him and said “Go on Mrs. Starc!”. The message was for wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, Starc’s wife, who is one of the key members of the Australian side.
Healy has a brilliant record playing in the finals. On being asked if he was tipping her to do the same again, Starc said:
“Yeah, she likes the big games and has been building nicely. So everyone’s been going great, batters, bowlers, keepers. Sure it’ll be a fantastic game and I look forward to watching and hopefully celebrating the girls’ success over here in India.”
While Starc was speaking about his partner, Lyon sounded all pumped up as he interrupted him again and said “Big game player, Big Game Player!”
“They keep finding ways to win. So, they’ve done that for close to ten years now, they keep finding ways. I think they’ve made every final of every T20 World Cup. I think that’s an incredible record, probably the best single sporting World Cup record of all time I think! So, what’s one more? May as well knock it off in the final, lift the trophy and celebrate well in South Africa,” Starc further added.
