In a recent development, the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur is set to host its maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) match on March 23. The highly anticipated clash will feature the home team, Punjab Kings (PBKS), locking horns with the formidable Delhi Capitals (DC).

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has long been preparing for this occasion, marking a significant shift from its traditional venue, the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali. Construction of the Mullanpur stadium, which started in 2008, has been aimed at accommodating various game formats, including IPL encounters, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Test matches.

BCCI has approved the PCA Mullanpur stadium: PCA secretary Dilsher Khanna

Despite facing construction delays, the stadium is finally fully constructed. Following the release of the IPL schedule by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the PCA requested the relocation of the March 23 fixture to the Mullanpur venue. After a thorough inspection by BCCI officials, the stadium received the green signal.

Expressing his gratitude towards the BCCI's decision, PCA secretary Dilsher Khanna, as quoted by HT, affirmed, β€œThe BCCI has approved the PCA Mullanpur stadium for the upcoming IPL game on March 23. We are grateful to the BCCI secretary for showing faith in us. We want the fans to enjoy the game at the new stadium.”

Efforts are underway to ensure seamless connectivity to the venue. Collaboration with the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has been pivotal in addressing concerns regarding road access from Chandigarh and neighboring areas. Reassurances from authorities regarding the nearing completion of connecting infrastructure have reduced any apprehensions regarding accessibility.

BCCI has announced the schedule for IPL 2024 for the first 20 matches. The second phase of the IPL schedule will depend on the Lok Sabha elections. In preparation for the forthcoming encounters, PBKS has commenced a preparatory camp at the Mullanpur venue.
