'No 300 today unfortunately' - Dale Steyn's 300-run prediction in MI vs SRH clash goes wrong
Mumbai Indians require 163 runs to win Match No. 33 of the IPL 2025 against Mumbai Indians.
Former South African speedster Dale Steyn’s earlier bold prediction of the first-ever 300-run innings in IPL history would come on April 17, when Sunrisers Hyderabad would lock horns with Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, went all wrong.
Having seen SRH set a record-breaking 286-run performance earlier in the season, Steyn made his bet after SRH displayed their batting heroics in their season opener, hammering 286/6 against Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. “Small prediction. On April 17, we’ll see the first 300 in the IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to see it happen,” Steyn wrote on X.
However, in the ongoing match, Sunrisers were struggling a 76/2 at the halfway stage, even Steyn couldn’t keep the optimism going. He this time mentioned that the dream of 300 is still far. The Wankhede, instead of witnessing batting heroics, saw a slow-paced innings where SRH could only manage 162/5 in their 20 overs. "No 300 today unfortunately," he wrote. Furthermore, he jokingly then wrote that the match still see 300 runs combined. "So we might still see 300 tonight, it’ll just be both teams together," added Steyn.

With many expecting it to be a run-feast considering a batting-friendly surface, short boundaries, and a top order featuring Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Ishan Kishan. But unlike their explosive starts in previous matches, including an 83-run powerplay in the last game, SRH’s openers played their shots cautiously. Abhishek and Head took seven overs to bring up fifty, with not a single six between them. While Abhishek managed a 40 off 28, Head added 28 off 29, scoring his first sub-100 strike rate innings in over a year when facing more than 10 balls.
Mumbai Indians made the most of the conditions after deciding to bowl first. Will Jacks removed both Ishan Kishan and the Head, ending with 2/14 in three overs. Jasprit Bumrah finished with figures of 1/21. Hardik Pandya grabbed the wicket of Abhishek, and while Deepak Chahar went for runs, he did his job in the death overs.
