On Day 1 of the fifth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Shubman Gill and Steve Smith engaged in a verbal spat moments before the Indian batter's dismissal. The visitors were under pressure with openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal back in the pavilion by the eighth over.
Gill, returning to the side after missing the Boxing Day Test, was given the role of steadying the ship alongside Virat Kohli. Facing Nathan Lyon just ahead of lunch break in the 25th over, Gill looked confident to survive.
After blocking the penultimate ball of the over, he walked down the pitch to tap his bat and took extra time to face the final delivery. Smith and Marnus Labuschagne were visibly frustrated and took a dig at the youngster which was caught on the stump mic.
Labuschagne: “Easy, got it in easy!” He needs to call for the ‘sprain’. Smith: “This is bull****! Oi, let’s play!”
The Indian batter engaged in the banter and replied, "You take your time Smithy, no one says anything to you!."
To which both Aussie players replied. Smith: “Just play mate. Let’s play.”
Labuschagne: “Take your time son.”
Shubman tried to take his time there: Steven Smith
Lyon delivered the final ball of the over which was a slightly shorter and spun away sharply. Gill, looking to disrupt Lyon’s rhythm, charged down the wicket but failed to get to the pitch of the ball. His attempted to defend but it resulted in a thick edge, which flew directly to Smith at slip. The Australian fielder caught the catch and gave a fiery send-off to the right-hander who was dismissed for 20 off 64 balls.
"Shubman has tried to take his time there (and) it probably played into our hands. He decided to run at the last one, and I think he was trying to launch him (Lyon),” Smith said at the lunch while speaking to Fox Cricket.
Gill’s dismissal left India struggling at 57/3, as they headed into lunch on the backfoot. The young batter’s inability to convert starts into big scores has been a constant issue this series, with his highest score being 31.
