ODI World Cup 2023: Glenn Maxwell's pic at iconic Wankhede stairs grabs attention after awe-inspiring innings
Glenn Maxwell played one of the greatest ODI innings while battling cramps to take Australia home.
Glenn Maxwell played the knock of his life after he smoked Afghanistan with a valiant double century when his side looked down and out at 91 with the loss of seven tickets. While battling cramps and back issues which made even walking troublesome, Maxwell helped Australia land a semi-final ticket in the ongoing World Cup and fetched respect from all quarters.
The all-rounder was applauded by the Wankhede Stadium authorities as well and his picture while climbing the iconic stairs has been doing rounds on the internet. Maxwell, who smashed 201* off 128 with 21 fours and 10 sixes, wreaked havoc on Afghanistan at the time when Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men looked within touching distance of a historic victory.
The moment when Afghanistan bowlers unsettled mighty Australians with 91/7, the Men in Yellow pinned their semi-final hopes on Maxwell in pursuit of a 292-run target. The all-rounder gave in his blood, sweat, and tears to get the improbable task done for the five-time champions.
The 35-year-old ensured there were no hiccups for Australia after they lost seven wickets within 100 runs. With perfect support from skipper Pat Cummins from the opposite end, Maxwell launched a carnage on Afghanistan which would give them chills for a lifetime now.
Earlier in the game, Ibrahim Zadran's 129* off 143, assisted Afghanistan post 291 runs on the board while they were looking to keep their semi-final hopes alive. After losing the contest by three wickets, Afghanistan occupy the sixth spot on the World Cup points table and would look to have the rub of the green in their remaining WC fixture of league stage.
