Bangladesh's campaign in ODI World Cup 2023 turned from bad to worse as they were beaten comprehensively by 87 runs by the Netherlands on Saturday, October 28 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
After the shambolic result, a video of a Bangladeshi fan slapping himself with a shoe has taken the internet by storm. The 'Bangla Tigers' fan expressed his disappointment by taking off his shoe and slapping himself after lambasting the team for their timid performance.
Earlier in the day, Scott Edwards won the toss and opted to bat first. The team did not get off to a good start as they lost their openers inside the first three overs. Wesley Barresi and Colin Ackerman steadied the ship with a 59-run stand. However, wickets fell in clusters as the Dutch side found themselves at 107/5 at the end of 27 overs.
The captain joined forces with Sybrand Engelbrecht and formed a 78-run partnership to bring their team back into the game. After they were dismissed, Logan van Beek hit some lusty blows and helped the Netherlands finish their innings with some momentum. Bangladesh were set a target of 230 runs on a decent pitch.
The team from Europe made Bangladesh earn every run as they bowled and fielded commendably. Bangladesh lost six wickets for 70 runs and some late resistance took them to the three-figure mark. Eventually, Edwards and Co. wo by 87 runs and Paul van Meekeren was awarded Player of the Match for his fantastic spell of 4/23 in 7.2 overs.
This was Bangladesh's fifth loss on the trot and they are now languishing at No. 9 on the points table, just above England. However, the Bangladesh fans have stuck through thick and thin with their team. Shakib Al Hasan will have to motivate his troops and try to give their passionate supporters something to cheer about in the games to come.
