After the drubbing in the Asia Cup 2023 final against India, Sri Lanka suffered yet another humiliating defeat at the hands of the 'Men in Blue' in the ODI World Cup on Thursday, November 2. Rohit Sharma and Co. outclassed Sri Lanka, winning by a massive 302-run margin at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka came into the encounter with two wins and four losses from six games. They needed to win the game to stay in contention for a spot in the semi-finals. However, they were completely outplayed by a confident Indian side, who won their seventh game in a row and sealed a semi-final berth. After the match, Russel Arnold posted a video where he gave a grim reaction to the encounter.

'My match review #Indvsl #Cwc23' and was seen wiping off imaginary tears," Arnold captioned his post.

Speaking of the match, Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis decided to bowl first after winning the toss earlier in the day. Dilshan Madushanka gave the island nation an early breakthrough, as he castled Rohit Sharma with a peach of a delivery. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were put down by Charith Asalanka and Dushmantha Chameera, respectively, and the star batters made the fielding side pay.

Shubman and Virat put on an outstanding 189-run stand off 179 balls to set India a perfect platform. However, both batters were dismissed in quick succession, agonisingly short of the three-figure mark. Sri Lanka thought they could pull things back but Shreyas Iyer, who was struggling a bit with his form in the recent games, played a brilliant knock of 82 off 56 balls as India finished on 357/8 in 50 overs.

Trio of Shami, Siraj and Bumrah rattled Sri Lanka batters to hand India semifinal berth

Chasing the daunting target in the ODI World Cup 2023 game, Sri Lanka lost their first eight wickets for 29 runs. Maheesh Theekshana and Kasun Rajitha hit a couple of boundaries each to take their team past the lowest total scored in the history of ODI World Cups. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami wreaked havoc, with the latter picking up his second five-wicket haul in the tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja finished with one wicket apiece as Sri Lanka were bowled out of 55. The 'Lankan Lions' are not officially out of the semi-final race but they will have to win their two remaining games and hope that a lot of other results go their way.
