In the 39th match of the ICC World Cup 2023, Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first against Australia at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Afghanistan put up an impressive batting performance, with their opener, Ibrahim Zadran, playing a pivotal role. Zadran crafted an unbeaten 129 off143 deliveries and was involved in several crucial partnerships, including an 83-run stand with Rahmat Shah for the second wicket.

As Afghanistan approached the final overs, they accelerated their scoring, with notable contributions from Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan. Rashid Khan finished the innings strongly with an undefeated 35 runs from 18 balls. Although Australia's bowling was generally disciplined, there were some questionable bowling changes made by Pat Cummins. Australia's reply got off to a disastrous start, with Travis Head dismissed for a duck, followed by Marsh being trapped LBW by Naveen.

Then, Omarzai struck with two wickets in consecutive deliveries, leaving Australia at 49/4. Glenn Maxwell faced a hat-trick ball but survived a close call. He was also given a lifeline when Hashmatullah Shahidi couldn't reach a miscued shot, and an LBW review ruled in his favour, as a Noor Ahmad delivery was predicted to go over the stumps. The luckiest break, however, came when Mujeeb Ur Rahman dropped a straightforward catch at short fine leg.

Australia's chase of the 292-run target got off to a rocky start, with early wickets falling, and at one point, they were in a precarious position at 91/7. However, Glenn Maxwell played an extraordinary innings that defied all expectations. Maxwell scored an incredible 201 not out of 128 balls, all while battling a semi-functional back and playing on one leg. His heroic performance turned the match around, taking Australia from the brink of defeat to the brink of victory and creating an unforgettable spectacle.
