In a match at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, India and Australia locked horns in the fifth match of the ODI World Cup 2023. Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision seemed wise initially, but Chepauk's pitch proved to be a formidable adversary. India's Jasprit Bumrah drew first blood, sending Australian opener Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion with an exceptional outswing delivery. A simple catch by Virat Kohli in the slip cordon did the trick.

However, the Australians weren't about to surrender easily. The experienced duo of David Warner and Steven Smith joined forces, putting together a resilient partnership of 69 runs. Just as the Australians began to regain their composure, Kuldeep Yadav's brilliant leg spin sent Warner packing.

Smith's departure at 110 runs was a significant blow, and the Australian team struggled to recover. Ravindra Jadeja's prowess with the ball led to three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav and Bumrah chipped in with two apiece. In the end, Australia could only score a modest 199 runs in 49.3 overs, with Smith and Warner contributing 46 and 41 runs, respectively.

Chasing a target of 200, India's top order crumbled, losing three wickets with just three runs on the board. It seemed as though the Australians might successfully defend their total. However, at a crucial moment, Mitchell Marsh dropped a straightforward catch off Virat Kohli's bat, shifting the momentum in India's favour.

Kohli capitalized on the reprieve, forming a remarkable partnership with KL Rahul. Their combined efforts steadied the Indian innings, eventually securing a thrilling victory with six wickets to spare. Kohli's gritty 85 runs and Rahul's impressive 97 were the driving forces behind India's triumph, leaving fans on the edge of their seats until the very end.
