Match 7 of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 featured a clash between England and Bangladesh at the HCPA Stadium in Dharamshala on Tuesday, October 10. England came into the clash on the back of a defeat against New Zealand in the season opener of the tournament. On the other hand, Bangladesh came into the game after a resounding win against Afghanistan in their previous game. 

England came into bat first after losing the toss and got off to a brilliant start as openers Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan put forth brilliant performances, scoring 52 and 140 runs, respectively. Furthermore, Joe Root added another 82 runs on the board as well. With short cameos by the middle-order batters, England managed to post 364 on the board.

As for the bowling side, Mahedi Hasan was the highest wicket-taker with four wickets in eight overs, in which he conceded 71 runs while Shoriful Islam took three wickets as well. Further, Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan struck once.

Reece Topley’s masterclass helps England win first game

Aiming to defend a total of 364, England put forth a magnificent performance. Bangladesh kicked off their innings with a brilliant knock from Litton Das, who amassed 76 runs in 66 deliveries. However, the rest of the top order could not amount to much after Das’ knock.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy did play resilient innings of 51 and 39 runs, respectively. However, the same was not enough to propel Bangladesh to their second World Cup 2023 win.

England put in a brilliant performance with the ball, as Reece Topley was the highest wicket-taker for the defending champions, taking four wickets for 43 runs in 10 overs, Topley ensured a win for his side. Furthermore, Chris Woakes took two wickets, with Sam Curran, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid, and Liam Livingstone striking once each as England won the game by 137 runs.
