New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson stood in total disbelief after being bamboozled by debutant Usama Mir in the first One Day International against Pakistan at the National Bank Arena in Karachi on January 9. Williamson, who took time to settle down in the middle, was cleaned up by the tall spinner before he could do any damage.

The onus was on the Kiwi captain to keep the scoreboard ticking after his side had lost two crucial wickets inside the powerplay. However, that was not to be as his dismissal reduced the side to 69/3 in the 15th over. On the second delivery of the over, Usama deceived Williamson with a dream ball as the skipper was dismissed after scoring a painstaking 26 off 39.

It was indeed an ideal start to Usama’s international career as his very first scalp happened to be Williamson, who is regarded as one of the best batters in modern-day cricket. Apart from Williamson, the leggie also accounted for wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham for 42.

The 27-year-old was handed his debut cap by head coach and spin legend Saqlain Mushtaq before the start of the first ODI of the series, and he succeeded in living up to the expectations of the team.

Earlier, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bowl first. The move paid off instantly as Naseem Shah dismissed Devon Conway for a golden duck. Having lost half their side for 147 in the 32nd over, the visitors were helped by Michael Bracewell (43 off 42) and Glenn Phillips (37 off 53), who added 66 runs for the sixth wicket to take the team past 200. New Zealand eventually managed 255/9 in their allotted 50 overs, with Naseem Shah scalping a fifer.
