On January 8, 2011, Rohit Sharma was roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) for $2 million at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. He had represented Deccan Chargers in the first three seasons of the cash-rich league.
On Wednesday, he completes 14 years at the Mumbai Indians franchise. He has become an all-time legend for the Mumbai-based team after guiding them to five IPL titles. Rohit took up captaincy midway through IPL 2013, replacing Ricky Ponting, who was going through a slump in batting form. The Nagpur-born brought instant success to Mumbai, leading them to their first-ever title by beating arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final.
Mumbai went on to win the title in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. They defeated Chennai in the finals in 2015 and 2019. Meanwhile, in 2017 and 2020, they defeated Rising Pune Supergiant and Delhi Capitals, respectively. Mumbai Indians became the first franchise to win five IPL titles. Rohit was also the first player to add five IPL trophies to his cabinet as a captain. MS Dhoni joined him when he led CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023.
Rohit's impressive performances as the Mumbai Indians skipper helped him climb up the pecking order in the captaincy race in the Indian team. He started to lead the Men in Blue in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli before taking up the role on a full-time basis in February 2022.

Rohit unceremoniously removed as MI's Captain ahead of IPL 2024
Ahead of IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma was sacked as the Captain of MI after three dismal seasons with the bat. He was replaced by Hardik Pandya, who had led Gujarat Titans to the finals in the previous two editions of the IPL, bagging the title in 2022. The MI management faced massive outrage from the fans, who felt that the franchise didn't show enough respect for Rohit's immense contributions.
There were speculations of Rohit not being happy with the management and looking to move out of the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. However, those speculations were put to bed when the 38-year-old was retained by the franchise for INR 16.30 crore.
In 217 innings for Mumbai, Rohit has smashed 5,731 runs at an average of 29.69 and a strike rate of 131.05. He has 36 half-centuries and two tons to his name. His highest score of 109* came off just 60 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in IPL 2012.
