India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson underwent surgery on his injured finger but is expected to recover in time for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), where he will lead Rajasthan Royals (RR). The surgery took place on Tuesday, and the recovery period is estimated to be around a month, giving Samson enough time to come back to full fitness before the tournament begins in late March.

Notably, Samson sustained the injury during the fifth T20I against England, which was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, on February 2. The incident took place when he was struck on the index finger by a sharp delivery by Jofra Archer early in his innings. Despite receiving on-field treatment, Samson continued to bat but was dismissed shortly after. He did not take the field in the second innings, with Dhruv Jurel taking over the wicketkeeping duties in India's 150-run victory.

Sanju Samson managed to score just 51 runs in T20Is against England

Due to the injury, the right-hander was forced to miss Kerala’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final match against Jammu & Kashmir, which began on February 8 in Pune. Samson’s recent performances in international cricket have been underwhelming. In the England T20I series, he managed only 51 runs across five matches at an average of 10.20 and a strike rate of 118.60. The short ball troubled him throughout the series, with English pacers repeatedly exploiting his weakness against high-rise deliveries.

The veteran was even excluded from India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against England and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The selectors' decision was also influenced by his absence from Kerala’s Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, as he did not attend the preparatory camp before the tournament.

With international opportunities currently limited, Samson’s next focus is to lead Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025. The franchise had a strong run in the previous season under his captaincy, reaching the playoffs before being knocked out by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second Qualifier.
