A fairytale finale for Lionel Messi
A determined Lionel Messi who was making his final FIFA World Cup appearance this time was a man on a mission and had the hunger to excel after falling agonizingly short in the 2014 edition against Germany at the Maracana Stadium where he had to settle for the consolation prize.
The 35-year-old looked focused with positive body language right from the word ‘go’ and also made the most of his opportunities when it came to scoring. He successfully converted a penalty in the 23rd minute to help Argentina draw first blood.
However, the real fun started during the dying minutes of regulation time when French striker Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty and a goal as the scores were leveled at 2-2.
Messi netted another one in the 108th minute to take Argentina’s scoreline to 3-2 before his PSG teammate Mbappe returned the favour by scoring off a penalty as the match headed into the penalty shootouts with the score being tied at 2-2.
During the penalties, Argentina goalie Emi Martinez’s two crucial saves ensured that France's title defence came to an end.
