SL vs AUS 2025: Warne-Murali legacy board unveiled at Galle

A commemorative display of two spin legends of cricket, Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan, has been recently placed at the entrance of the Galle International Stadium. The iconic venue is currently hosting the first Test of the two-match Warne-Muralitharan Trophy between Sri Lanka and Australia.

As per a post by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on their social media accounts, supporters have been allowed to pay tribute by adding their signatures on the board. Former all-rounder, Farveez Maharoof, was the first person to add his signature on the majestic panel. The Legacy Board is set to remain intact throughout the series.

Coming to the history of the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, the inaugural game played between Sri Lanka and Australia was played in November 2007 after the bilateral series was branded in the name of the two legends. A total of 15 matches have been played, with nine of them going in the favour of the Aussies.

Interestingly, the two maestros of the game played the same number of Tests (13) against each other's nations, and picked up the same number of wickets (59) as well. As expected, both of them had stellar numbers backing their performances.

In the 24 innings that Warne bowled against the Lankans, he averaged 25.54 at a sub-3 economy rate. He accounted for a couple of 10-wicket hauls too. Whereas, for Muralitharan, his average and economy rate was a tad higher than that of Warne. However, the current leading wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket possessed better innings and match figures.

Australia get past 550, intensify hardship for Sri Lanka  

With respect to the ongoing game, Australia are comfortably in front at the time of writing. A stunning double-ton from Usman Khawaja and centuries from Steve Smith and Josh Inglis each have led them to a score northwards of 550.

Prabath Jayasuriya and Jeffrey Vandersay have had to toil hard for scalping three and two wickets, respectively. Playing his second Test, off-spinner, Nishan Peiris, remains wicketless with Australia on 591/5 after 141 overs.
