The match between South Africa and Pakistan was a thrilling Boxing Day event at Centurion. Despite the efforts of Mohammad Abbas South Africa's lower order managed to win the game and ensure their place in the WTC Finals on June 11, 2025 for the first time.
The crowd at Centurion went wild as Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen’s ninth wicket partnership ensured South Africa's victory but the efforts from Pakistan pacers including Mohammad Abbas cannot be ignored as well. The 34-year-old pacer was making his comeback in international cricket after three years and went on to take his fifth five-wicket haul in Test matches finishing with figures of 6/54 in the second innings and taking seven wickets overall in the game. The last Test match Abbas played before this was in 2021. This has also led to former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir attacking the coaches and selectors on social media.

This was also followed by a reply from former Pakistan spinner Abdur Rehman posting a GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) allegedly hinting that the senior players and selectors should hide their faces after the decision to drop Abbas three years ago.
“Woh coaches ko samne le k ayo jinho ne abbas ko pace ki wajah se bahir kar diya.or abbas ko 3 saal lage comeback me. slap on their faces. (To the coaches who dropped Abbas because of his pace which led to him making a comeback after three years. Slap on their faces),” Aamir tweeted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Speaking of Mohammad Abbas’s performance in red-ball cricket he currently has 97 wickets in just 26 matches and is averaging only 22.73 in the format. Apart from that, he also has 748 wickets in first-class cricket which shows why he almost became a big thorn for the Proteas in the second innings on a seaming wicket in Centurion.
