In a dazzling display of cross-disciplinary prowess, Australian cricket star Steve Smith left tennis maestro Novak Djokovic in awe during an exhibition event at Melbourne Park. The charity match, held at Rod Laver Arena as a precursor to the Australian Open, showcased the unexpected tennis skills of Smith and other sports personalities.
Sharing the court with the 24-time Grand Slam champion, the right handed batter's competitive spirit was on full display. Djokovic initiated the exchange with a gentle serve aimed at Smith's body, but the cricket sensation's incredible footwork allowed him to evade the ball and deliver a return that landed perfectly within the court boundaries. Djokovic, genuinely impressed, lauded Smith and even bowed down in acknowledgment of Smith's tennis finesse.

The roles reversed briefly as Djokovic tried his hand at cricket, wielding the bat in an attempt to replicate Smith's proficiency. However, the Serbian tennis icon's cross-batted shot missed the mark. When Djokovic traded the cricket bat for a tennis racquet, the ball soared into the crowd at Melbourne Park.
Is it too late to add him to the test squad?! From the sounds of it the selectors are open to trying things out...@DjokerNole • #AusOpen • #AO2024 pic.twitter.com/VAJq2KFShr

Steve Smith set to embrace opener’s slot
Meanwhile, Smith is gearing up for a new challenge in Test cricket as he has volunteered for the opener's role, filling the void left by the retirement of David Warner. Additionally, he has been appointed as the ODI captain for the series against the West Indies, following the decision by senior selectors to rest Pat Cummins.
As for Djokovic, embarking on his title defense at the Australian Open, he will face a pre-qualifier in the initial rounds. The Serbian superstar, chasing his 25th Grand Slam crown, aims to complete a Golden Slam this year, with participation in the Paris Olympics on the horizon. Having secured three out of four Grand Slam victories last year, Djokovic's quest for tennis glory continues on the courts of Melbourne Park.
