The 70th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore and the defending champions Gujarat Titans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday, May 21. As Gujarat won the game by six wickets, the win meant that Bangalore missed out on the playoff spot.

Despite a magnificent century by Virat Kohli in the first innings, Shubman Gill’s blitzkrieg during the run chase played spoilsport for Bangalore. Gill played an unbeaten knock of 104 runs in 52 deliveries, and his knock eliminated the Faf du Plessis-led side from the competition.

His innings also propelled him to second place in the race for the IPL orange cap, with 680 runs in 14 matches. Following Gill’s blitzkrieg, many fans took to social media to hurl abuse at Gill. Furthermore, they also targeted the Indian batter’s sister after his ton against Bangalore. Seeing the targeted abuse towards Gill, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha took to Twitter and condemned the actions of the fans.

"Trolls targeting someone's family due to their team's loss is deplorable and completely unacceptable. Such behaviour should never be condoned. Respect and empathy should prevail, regardless of sports outcomes," Pragyan Ojha tweeted.
