England have begun their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 campaign with an impressive five-wicket victory over Afghanistan at the Perth Stadium on Saturday, October 22. It was indeed an easy win for the Three Lions as their star all-rounder Sam Curran starred with an outstanding fifer to bowl the opposition out for just 112 runs on the board.

The Afghanistan batters never looked comfortable out in the middle and were just sitting ducks in front of the English bowling attack who made the most of that Perth surface after Jos Buttler called it right at the toss and decided to chase.

England made to work hard by Afghanistan for earning their first points

Being asked to bat first, the Mohammad Nabi-led side tried to get off to a good start before England not only pulled things back but also ended up applying a stranglehold on them from the third over onwards. From then on, the batters failed to make much of an impact and at one point in time it appeared as if the Afghans would be bundled out cheaply with hardly anything on the board.

Nonetheless, the duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Usman Ghani toiled hard to keep the scoreboard ticking, but with no support from the other end, their innings was not getting any momentum which was instrumental in posting a challenging total.

Zadran and Ghani scored a run-a-ball 32 and 30 respectively as Afghanistan were skittled for 112 in the final over.  Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers for England with figures of 5/10 from his 3.4 overs while Ben Stokes and Mark Wood toogot two wickets each and Chris Woakes chipped in with a scalp.

In reply, skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales did ensure a good start for the Three Lions with a 35-run opening stand and once the duo was dismissed, it opened up the floodgates for Afghanistan as they struck back with quick wickets.

At 81/5, an upset looked pretty much on the cards for England, but Liam Livingstone's unbeaten 21-ball 29 took them over the line comfortably in the penultimate over. For Afghanistan, all bowlers except Azmatullah Omarzai took one wicket apiece.
