T20 World Cup 2022: Glenn Phillips endures awkward injury while fielding during Sri Lanka clash
New Zealand crushed Sri Lanka in the match.
New Zealand completely outplayed Sri Lanka in their third fixture of the Super 12 stage in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 beating the latter by a mammoth 65 runs. Glenn Phillips’ 104-run knock off just 64 balls coupled with Trent Boult’s sublime bowling display, scalping a four-fer handed their side a huge victory.
However, in the midst of the match, the top scorer of the side in the fixture, Phillips endured a rather ‘awkward’ injury while on field during the second innings of the game. The Lankan Lions were to chase a competitive total of 167 set by the BlackCaps but as they hit the pitch, the side were just not in the game from the very starting.
Glenn Phillips’ awkward injury against Sri Lanka
Phillips, who was fielding for his side during the Lankan batting innings, faced an awkward blow. During Sri Lanka’s chase, on the third ball of the 14th over, Lockie Ferguson’s ball was delicately hit by Kasun Rajitha towards the deep mid-wicket fielder, Glenn Phillips.
As the player ran towards the ball and collected it comfortably and threw the ball quickly towards the bowler's end, he ended up stopping the motion of his body and felt discomfort immediately after. What followed was the player trying to stretch himself in a strange manner. However, the 25-year-old has not endured a major blow and could very well feature in the side’s forthcoming fixtures.
Talking about the match, New Zealand started off their innings with the bat on a slower note as they lost wickets in quick succession. However, Phillips who came down the order, shifted gears and blasted the ball on numerous occasions helping his side attain a competitive total.
Moreover, it was the bowling department with the courtesy of Boult who made life difficult for the Lankan batters as the latter were all out for just 102. The Kiwis have nearly cemented their semi-final berth with the massive win over Sri Lanka.
