In a big upset,  Namibia defeated the Asia Cup champions, Sri Lanka, in the tournament opener of the 2022 T20 World Cup played at the Simonds Stadium, Geelong on October 16 (Sunday).

The associate nation was down and out at one stage of the match but some excellent batting display followed by a disciplined bowling effort meant that Namibia gave Sri Lanka a reality check in their first match of the competition. Meanwhile, the netizens brutally trolled the Sri Lankan side after they lost the match by a big margin.

Speaking about the game, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. The batting team had a poor start as they lost three wickets inside the field restrictions. The situation went bad from worse after Namibia lost six wickets without even crossing the 100-run mark.

However, an excellent batting partnership between Jan Frylinck (44 runs) and JJ Smit (31 runs) ensured that the batting side made an excellent comeback as they crossed the 160-run mark in their allotted 20 overs.

Sri Lanka batters failed to chase 164 runs

Chasing 164 to win, Sri Lanka batters failed to give a good start to their team. The batting team also lost three wickets inside the powerplay with both openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis failing to get going.

Batters Bhanuka Rajapaksa and the skipper Shanaka tried to stabilize the innings as they formed a short but crucial partnership. However, both of them got out at the wrong time as the opposition bowlers choked Sri Lanka for runs.

In the end, Sri Lanka somehow managed to cross the 100-run mark, but they could not even bat their full 20 overs as they got all out for a mere 108 runs. For Namibia, David Wiese, Bernard Scholtz, Ben Shikongo, and Jan Frylinck scalped two wickets each.
