Eight teams are fighting tooth and nail and giving their best so as to make their way into the Super 12 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 and fight for the prestigious trophy. Eight teams have started their campaign at the global event, and in just a couple of days, the cricketing world has witnessed some major upsets.
Amid all the hustle, United Arab Emirates leg spinner Karthik Meiyappan bagged a magnificent hat-trick against Sri Lanka in the sixth match of the T20 World Cup 2022 first round. In the contest between Sri Lanka and the UAE, Meiyappan, while bowling in the 15th over of the first innings, dished out Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and the opposition skipper Dasun Shanaka.
At the end of the 14th over, Sri Lanka looked comfortable at 114/2. The Lankans had lost a wicket in the powerplay, but Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva built the innings thereon and added runs on board. After De Silva’s dismissal, Nissanka and Rajapaksa looked to anchor the innings, but little did they know what they had ahead of them.
Meiyappan seals a hat-trick with three googlies
On the fourth delivery of Meiyappan’s 15th over, Rajapaksa was caught as he tried to pitch the ball over deep cover point. He dismissed Asalanka off the fifth delivery of that over by bowling a googly on a length outside off stump. On his hat-trick delivery, he bowled another googly on off stump again, and Shanaka was left clueless as the ball directly dismantled the bails by hitting directly at the stumps.
Hat-tricks are always special for bowlers, but bagging a hat-trick at a global tournament like the World Cup made it a memorable day for Karthik Meiyappan. Not just the bowler, but the entire team burst out of joy on his achievement, and the celebration was surely crazy. Meiyappan added three big and crucial wickets under his belt and ended his four-over quota with figures of 3 for 19, whi Sri Lanka posted a target of 153 runs.
