The first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 went in South Africa's favour, as Aiden Markram & Co. reserved their spot in the grand finale of the coveted event. Crossing swords against a high on confidence Afghanistan, the South African pacers were asked to bowl as Afghan skipper Rashid Khan chose to bat first. The decision to put a total recoiled with a big jerk on the Afghan shoulders, as their batters succumbed to superb bowling from the opposition pacers.

In the very first over, Marco Jansen sent the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz back to the huddle, before Gulbadin Naib retorted in the third over. In the fourth over, Kagiso Rabada joined the wicket-taking party to run a bloodbath on the Afghan batters. At the end of the powerplay, Afghanistan were reeling badly at 28, having lost half the side. One would have hoped for a recovery of some sort, but needless strokes and unnecessary risks in the middle allowed for Anrich Nortje's attacking bowling, who also picked the wickets of Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid.

By the fall of Rashid's wicket, the scoreboard read 50/9 at 10.2 overs. For the last three batters, Tabraiz Shamsi got their number, courtesy of three lbw calls, all of which went in the spinner's favour. Only Keshav Maharaj, who bowled just one over, went wicketless, as the Blue Tigers roared only to score 56, getting bundled within 11.5 overs.

The chase was never going to be a difficult hike for the Proteas, but the in-form Fazalhaq Farooqi, who ended his run at the tournament as the highest wicket-taker (17) so far, sent Quinton de Kock back to the huddle. The skipper Markram, though, had solid determination to not let the quality of Afghanistan's bowling shine any further, engaging in a 55-run partnership with opener Reeza Hendricks. With this emphatic win, South Africa now await the result from the second semi-final for the opponent in the Grand Finale at Barbados on Saturday, June 29.
