India and England faced each other in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. India was asked to set a target as the English skipper Jos Buttler chose to bowl first. Both England and India walked onto the field without making any changes in their XI. The game saw a bit of delay due to some rain interruptions.
Being put in to bat first, Virat Kohli (9 off 9) found himself back in the dugout in after smashing a brilliant no-look six off Reece Topley's bowling. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma (57 off 39) kept the assault going as he was smashing the England bowlers with relative ease. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant didn't support Sharma for too long as he was dismissed after adding just four runs to the tally. India's scorecard read 46/2 after the end of the powerplay.
Rohit found company in Suryakumar Yadav (47 off 36), to keep the run-flowing rate in check. Both the batters stitched an important 73-run partnership to keep the pressure going on the opposition team. Sharma also became the fifth Indian skipper to cross the 5000-run mark across formats.

Hardik Pandya (23 off 13) and Ravindra Jadeja (17 off 9) provided India with a late flourish along with a small cameo of 10 runs from Axar Patel, as India posted 171/7 in their allotted 20 overs. For the defending champions, Chris Jordan was the wrecker-in-chief with the ball as he claimed three crucial wickets.

In reply, England came into the chase in pursuit of repeating the history of defeating India in the semi-final clash. The initial opening duo of Jos Buttler and Phil Salt started cautiously as they gave respect to Indian bowlers with the new ball in hand.
But Jasprit Bumrah drew the first blood as he dismissed Salt for a mere five runs. Buttler and Jonny Bairstow (23 off 15) also found themselves back in the pavilion before the end of the powerplay. The former champions found themselves in trouble as their score read 49/5 under nine overs. Harry Brook (25 off 19) and Jofra Archer (21 off 15) tried bringing their team back in the hunt but failed to do so as Indian bowlers kept the pressure going.
