Both Ireland and India played their first respective match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the eighth clash on Wednesday, June 05. The stage was set at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, as Rohit Sharma called it correctly at the toss, inviting the Irishmen to bat first. India's decision to bowl worked wonders, as the Paul Stirling & Co lost half the side at the end of nine overs, as the scoreboard read 44/5.

Gareth Delany provided some hopes for a comeback with his 26-run knock, but no support from the other end meant Ireland were bundled out for an underwhelming total of 96 after 16 overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh chipped in with a couple of wickets each, but it was Hardik Pandya who was the pick of the bowlers with his 3/27 in 4 overs. Just two overs of spin from Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja produced 10 runs and a wicket for the former.

During the chase, the conditions were tricky, as the ball was getting stuck in the New York surface, and also had uneven pace and bounce. This led to Virat Kohli (1) losing his wicket cheaply, scoring just a run as Mark Adair got the big fish early on. However, skipper Rohit Sharma (52 off 37, retd hurt) ensured a calculated onslaught alongside the new number three batter Rishabh Pant (36* off 26).

There were no hiccups of sort, as the Men in Blue crossed the finishing line with 46 balls to spare, as Pant audaciously hit a reverse ramp behind the keeper to finish the things in style. Adair was the pick of the bowlers for the opposition, ending his spell with 1/27 in 4 overs, while Ben White got a solitary wicket of Suryakumar Yadav (2 off 4) in the only over he bowled.\

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah was adjudged Player of the Match for his figures of 3-1-6-2, as Rohit & Co got their campaign off to a flyer, clinching a convincing win in their tournament opener. Meanwhile, X (formerly Twitter) was abuzz with hilarious memes as fans posted rib-tickling reactions on the Wednesday's encounter.
