West Indies squared off against New Zealand in the match no. 26 of the ongoing Men's T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday, June 13. The encounter had an equal importance for both the teams, as a win would have kept them alive in the tournament, but the Kiwis were in for a must-win clash at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad.
As things stood, Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bowl first on a tricky surface. The decision reaped rewards immediately, as Trent Boult struck in the very first over, sending Johnson Charles for a five-ball duck. The BlackCaps further capitalized on the momentum, and the hosts were soon reduced to 23/4 at the end of the powerplay.
However, at the fall of Rovman Powell's wicket in the sixth over, Sherfane Rutherford made his way to the centre. While wickets kept tumbling at one end, Rutherford kept the scoreboard ticking, before finally hitting his strokes freely. The ravishing all-rounder engaged in a 37-run partnership with Gudakesh Motie, scoring all the runs, while the no. 11 batter prioritized staying at the non-striker's end to propel the Windies to 149/9 after 20 overs.

Boult was the best bowler for the Kiwis, picking three wickets, including a maiden, in his four-over spell. The pace duo of Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson also chipped in with a couple of wickets each, while James Neesham and Mitchell Santner also got a wicket apiece.
In reply, the dismissal of Devon Conway in the third over brought the Powell's men into the game strongly, as runs couldn't come thick and easy for the BlackCaps. Finn Allen departed in the sixth over to invite Williamson to the crease, but he didn't impress and was trapped by Gudakesh Motie for a 2-ball-1. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, which eventually didn't allow the Kiwi batters to free their arms and hit at will.
In the last three overs, Glenn Phillips and Santner were at the crease, and the game was still alive, but excellent death bowling by Alzarri Joseph got the better of a well-set Phillips for 40 (33). Joseph got three more wickets in the match, followed by three-for from Gudakesh Motie. Santner tried to hit 33 runs required off the last over, but only managed 19 with three sixes, as the Windies clinched the game by 13 runs.
With this win, Rovman Powell-led side stormed into the Super Eight Stage with a third victory in a row. Meanwhile, the New Zealanders are yet to open their account on the points table, which makes their matters worse and a possible ouster from the league stage of the tournament, their first-ever.
Meanwhile, Twitterers were at their job of sharing their rib-tickling take on the match with funny and hilarious memes. Let us take a look at some of the funniest memes from the match:
