Oman is a cultural hub for many Asian countries. People from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka migrate to the country for business aspirations and employment. The Asian inclination towards the Gulf country has rubbed off on the national cricket team too. As a result, Oman, who are representing at the T20 World Cup 2024 have diverse players who have origins in some different nations.

Oman player, Zeeshan Maqsood has revealed that the team possesses players from different walks of life and who speak different languages. He also revealed that the members of the Oman squad are well-versed in at least four or five languages. Maqsood revealed that cricketers can speak Pashto, an Eastern Iranian language from the Indo-European family. Pashto is also the national language of Afghanistan and is also popular in Pakistan and Iran. Punjabi, Urdu, English, and Arabic are other languages.

This was a great opportunity to rub shoulders with top players: Ilyas

Playing in their first-ever ICC event, Oman displayed a dismal show at the T20 World Cup 2024. They were placed in Group B alongside, Australia, Scotland, England, and Namibia. The team failed to win a single game and was the first from the group to get eliminated. After their loss to England, Oman captain Aqib Ilyas expressed his gratitude for having played with big teams and big players.

“You can’t blame the bowlers for anything, throughout the tournament they’re the ones that did really well. Would have liked to finish on a great note. We have a lot to learn from the big players. Usually you don’t get to learn from top players so this was a great opportunity to rub shoulders with them. We have to work harder, if you want to have an impact you need to work a lot harder,” said Ilyas at the post-match presentation.
