The clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh during the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 didn't just showcase cricketing skills, but also a fiery verbal spat that caught everyone's attention. The match was held at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on August 31.
Known for their nail-biting encounters and light-hearted 'Naagin Dance' celebrations, this match didn't disappoint in terms of drama either. Sri Lanka's bowling unit, despite missing key players like Wanindu Hasarnga and Dushmantha Chameera, dominated the first innings and kept Bangladesh to a total of 164, with Najmul Hossain Shanto being the standout performer with 89 runs.
A few other batters also got start but couldn’t convert them to a big knock and it was quite evident that Bangladeshi batters were not able to adapt to the slow conditions of Srilankan wickets.
However, it was during the second innings that emotions ran high. Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis and Bangladesh's Shoriful Islam were at the centre of a verbal exchange. The spat occurred after a delivery outside off-stump, which Mendis chose to leave. Islam's comments were not liked by Mendis, leading to a heated exchange of words. Fortunately, the situation didn't escalate as the on-field umpire intervened promptly.
Sri Lanka also faced a shaky start to their chase, losing early wickets including Mendis who struggled before being dismissed by a brilliant arm ball by Shakib Al Hasan. However, half-centuries by Saeera Samarawikrama and Charith Asalanka steadied the ship, guiding Sri Lanka to a five-wicket victory.
