Shreyas Iyer is set to lead the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the upcoming IPL 2025 season and has also confirmed that he would like to bat at the number three position in the upcoming tournament for the franchise. The Champions Trophy winner gave a confident answer while talking about batting at this number.
The last couple of years has been incredible for Iyer where he won his first IPL title as a captain with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and had an amazing Champions Trophy where he ended up as the highest run-getter in his team. The 30-year-old batter will now be the 17th player to lead the team and has discussed in detail his batting position during the press conference which also featured PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting. Iyer has also mentioned that he is clear about his preferred position as a batter. This will also be interesting since last season he was batting at number four or below for the Knight Riders.
“We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket and If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be No. 3, and that's what I'm focusing at. I wouldn't say that we are planning and thinking about what number I will be batting. This time I'm quite clear about that position. And I'm going to be focusing on that number. As long as the coach approves of me,” The PBKS skipper said.

Ponting and Iyer reunion
This will not be the first time Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting will be working together as captain and head coach since the two worked together in the Delhi Capitals side from 2019 to 2021. These were also Shreyas Iyer's early stints of leading an IPL franchise as well.
The three years also saw the Capitals make it to the playoffs three times in a row. They made it to their first IPL final in 2020 where they unfortunately faced defeat against the Mumbai Indians losing the game by five wickets. Iyer played an unbeaten knock of 65 off 50 deliveries during the match as well.
