After New Zealand’s humiliating performance in Sri Lanka, Tim Southee decided to step down as the Test captain. He took over after Kane Williamson resigned from the position in December 2022 and since then, the Black Caps have looked pale in the longest format. They have a decent track record at home but away from New Zealand, they have lost to Sri Lanka, Australia and England since the 2022 season. They also have drawn series in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Holding himself accountable, Southee has resigned from his position. Veteran keeper-batter Tom Latham will take over from the upcoming three-match Test series against India. He has led New Zealand in nine Test matches previously when Williamson was not available. Meanwhile, Southee has captained the team in 14 Test matches, winning and losing six, while two ended on level terms.

Announcing his decision to step down, Southee mentioned it was an honour for him to lead the side and now wants to focus on his performance on the field to help New Zealand win more Test matches. He also extended his support towards Latham and mentioned supporting his teammates, especially the young pacers of New Zealand.

“Captaining the Blackcaps in a format that's so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege. I've always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team. I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field and getting back to my best, to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches,” Southee said.

“I will, as I've always done, continue to support my team-mates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I'll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years,” he added.

Meanwhile, Southee’s own form is a bit of a concern. He has picked up only 12 wickets in the last eight Test matches, and his inclusion in the Playing XI during the India series will be under scrutiny.
