'Timing is Everything' - Wasim Jaffer comes up with cheeky reply to Michael Vaughan's two-division Test system suggestion

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer and England skipper Michael Vaughan have shared a longstanding, light-hearted rivalry on social media, often engaging in banter. Recently, Vaughan suggested a comprehensive restructuring of Test cricket, which got a witty response from Jaffer.

Vaughan proposed that Test cricket should be divided into two divisions to ensure a more even distribution of wealth and competitive balance among the Test-playing nations. Vaughan's suggestion comes after England's impressive series win over Sri Lanka, where they secured a 2-0 lead with one match remaining. England's dominance in the series led Vaughan to argue that the current structure of Test cricket is tilting, with a few teams consistently outperforming others.

"Test cricket needs to be 2 Divisions of 6 ASAP .. and spread the wealth of the game more evenly across all countries," he wrote on his 'X' handle.

Wasim Jaffer responded to Vaughan's tweet as he posted a screenshot of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2024-25 standings, which showed England languishing at the bottom after a 1-4 series loss to India. 

"Timing is everything. And Michael is a wise man who understands that. That's why he didn't tweet this a month ago when the WTC table looked like this," Jaffer darted back in his reply with an element of sarcasm, however, on a lighter note.

India set to play Bangladesh for two-match Test series

England's recent form in Test cricket has been a mixed bag. After the series loss to India, they bounced back with victories against West Indies and Sri Lanka, thereby climbing to fourth place in the WTC standings.

Meanwhile, India remain comfortably at the top and they are set to play a two-match Test series against Bangladesh later this month. The series will be India’s first under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is eager to take the team back to winning ways after a disappointing white-ball tour in Sri Lanka.
