A majestic century from Player of the Match Rohit Sharma was the highlight of the day in India's series-clinching win against England in the second ODI at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday, February 09.
England were off to a superb start after winning the toss and electing to bat first in a must-win encounter. Their openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett did all it took to put up 75 runs in the first powerplay without losing a wicket. However, the 11th over witnessed Salt returning to the dug out after debutant Varun Chakravarthy drew the first blood for the side, taking a wicket on just the fifth ball to get his One-Day career ticking.
Seasoned specialist Ravindra Jadeja breathed fire with his three wickets, giving just 35 runs in his ten-over spell, which also included a maiden. However, Duckett (65 off 56) and Joe Root (69 off 72) did make sure to get the scoreboard running with a healthy scoring rate, as England seemed well on card for a huge score. However, three run-outs defined their uninvited collapse in the first innings, as they got bundled out after scoring 304 in 49.5 overs.
The hosts' response was solid from the word 'go'. Skipper Rohit, alongside his deputy Shubman Gill, dismantled the English bowling attack with some clean striking along the ground. Gill, who hit 87 in the Nagpur game, had to satisfy himself with a half-century in Cuttack as well, departing for 60 off 52 deliveries, including nine fours and an elegant paddle sweep to Adil Rashid that went for a six at the deep square leg region.
Unlike Gill, Rohit scored a desperate hundred, literally leading from the front through his 119 off a mere 90 balls. The senior batter brought up his 32nd ODI ton, which included seven balls being sent into the atmosphere for maximums, one of which got him to cross the three-figure mark, his first in internationals after over a year. A returning Virat Kohli, however, failed to impress, making his way back after adding only five runs.

Shreyas Iyer (44 off 47) and Axar Patel (41 not out from 43) added the finishing touch to the chase with their handy cameos during the fag end of the match. English bowlers, like their entire unit, were left with little to cherish at the end, as Jamie Overton picked up a couple of wickets. Leg-spinners Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone too picked a wicket each.
