'Total mayhem' - Netizens erupt in joy as Glenn Maxwell, David Warner tons power Australia to 399 against Netherlands
Maxwell scored the fastest century in World Cup history, reaching the mark in just 40 balls.
The 24th match of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 saw Australia and Netherlands lock horns at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first on a flat track.
Australia had a shaky start to their innings as opener Mitchell Marsh was dismissed early by Logan van Beek. Steven Smith then joined David Warner, and they initially played cautiously, building a solid partnership.
Once they settled in, they began playing attacking shots and putting pressure on the Dutch. They formed an impressive 132-run partnership for the second wicket before Smith was caught brilliantly by van der Merwe off Aryan Dutt.
Following Smith's dismissal, Marnus Labuschagne came in to bat with Warner and played a quick-fire innings of 62 runs off just 47 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. On the other end, Warner scored a brilliant century before being dismissed for 104 off 93.
Then came the explosive Glenn Maxwell, who took on the Dutch bowlers from the first ball and continued smashing them until he reached the fastest century in World Cup history. He completed his century in just 40 balls, breaking Aiden Markram's previous record in the tournament.
Maxwell's knock of 106 runs off 44 balls included nine fours and eight sixes, propelling Australia to a formidable total of 399. Despite being out of form with the bat recently, Maxwell entertained fans with his brilliant performance.
